The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an international organization for women educators. It was founded by 12 women in Austin Texas in 1929. The headquarters are in Austin which is also
the home of the Society´s website. The Society has now state organizations in many countries outside the USA.
The Icelandic organization was founded in 1975 with the Alfa chapter and in 1977 the Iceland State Organization was founded. It is part of the European region which was established in 1998. In
Iceland there are ten chapters, three of them in the Reykjavík area and the others in different regions, i.e. in Akureyri, in the West, in the South, in the East, in the South-West and in the
West Fjords. The chapters are independent and organize at least four meetings a year.
The chapters form a state organization and a state convention is held biennially in odd-numbered years. The state organization publishes a newsletter twice a year. Membership is by invitation. Those
who are instated acquire full rights as members of a chapter, the state organization and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. New chapters are founded with a ceremony and new members are
initiated formally into existing chapters.
The state spring convention will be held in Reykjavík on April 17 2010. The education committee and the state are in the process of preparing the convention.
The theme of the convention is: Good things happen.
